New York Portrait, Event, and Family Photography
Great to Meet You!
If you are reading this, I am assuming you are looking for a photographer in New York. My name is James and it’s nice to meet you.
You can email me or call with the details of your job and hopefully we can work together.
New York Portrait Photography
Along with a variety of services, I have been a New York portrait photographer since 2004, working with a wide variety of clients in a variety of locations. I run a portable studio working out offices, businesses, and homes, and I do frequent work around the city as well.
One of my favorite aspects of this job is collaborating with all types of fascinating people to create pictures that show their spirit, whether it’s through an elaborate and creative portrait session or a more standard headshot. It’s important to help you look and feel comfortable during a shoot.
In addition, I am an expert retoucher, having learned from the School of Visual Arts and working with commercial photographers early in my career. I retouch in a way that is both subtle and effective.
Business and Corporate Portraits
I have worked with all types of businesses to create images for marketing, advertising, website, and corporate communications. Whether the purpose is for website headshots or more elaborate communications, it can be done.
I use a mobile studio to travel to offices and do the work right there, with your choice of background, or we can use office backgrounds or locations around the city. We can redo portraits for the entire office with makeup and hair.
Portraits for Creatives
I love working with creative professionals to create portraits that show who you are and what you do.
Whether it’s an actor headshot or a shoot around the city, the goal is to show your spirit, and have a good time while we’re doing it. And I can come to you and work out of your studio.
Families, Couples, and Engagements
One of the best parts of this job is the people you meet, whether it’s taking a couple around my favorite areas of the city and photographing them, or capturing an entire family.
I would love to photograph you and your loved ones to help capture important memories. And I look forward to getting to know you.
While I shoot around the city, I also specialize in Central Park engagements, proposals, and weddings.
Events & Business Conferences
I have been an event photographer since 2006 with a wide range of experience.
I’ve been lucky enough to photograph an event in the whale room at the Natural History Museum and The US Open setting up full tennis courts in the Hyatt ballroom with top players.
I also photograph many business conferences in all types of locations. My most memorable was an insurance industry conference on climate change and natural disasters.
My retouching style is to clean up faces and photos without having the photo feel like they were retouched. I want people to look their best but still look like themselves.
It’s a subtle but detailed style of retouching that I originally learned from commercial retouchers and have refined over the years. (Although I do have the ability to do more extreme changes whenever needed).
Here are examples of a few before and after photos of my work.
What is working with me like?
As the son of two New York psychiatrists, I always grew up saying I would never become one myself. Yet it was quite a shock one day when I realized how portraiture has a few eerie similarities. You need to be able to get a person to open up to you quickly, often in only 15 minutes, and sometimes in only five minutes in the middle of their busy day.
I pride myself in being able to get to know my subjects quickly and to foster the right environment to be able to capture them naturally.
I love to meet people and always work hard to make everything as comfortable as possible.
A little about me
I am a born and raised New Yorker, originally from 94th Street in Manhattan, and now living in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
I’m a huge Knicks fan, a Chinese food fan, and I got my driver’s license at 30-years-old (like any true Manhattanite should). In addition to the services above, I create documentary projects and city photography, I run photography workshops. (I’m a certified tour and history guide), and I love writing and city history. I have a wonderful wife, Sara, and am the father of a young boy, Avery.
I have worked with a wide variety of companies, including The New York Daily News, The U.S. Open, G-Star Raw, Davis Wright Tremaine, Tiffany & Co., Intrepid Aviation, Van Cleef & Arpels, Heidrick and Struggles, and countless medium and small businesses and firms around New York.
