SUMMARY:Pamela Hanson - in the 90s
DESCRIPTION:In contrast to the posed fashion images so prevalent in magazines\, Pamela Hanson’s photographs convey a personal connection and a real friendship with her models who are engaged in fun\, joyful activities. As she began her career in Paris in the 1980’s\, Hanson roomed with models and tuned into their thinking\, ambitions and lifestyles – insight which served her well as her career progressed and she became one of the very few women working in the field at the time. This exhibition and the publication of her book The ’90s (Rizzoli) celebrate this distinct period in fashion and includes images that have never been published or exhibited previously. This book and these photographs are “a love letter to the decade that changed everything\,” says Hanson\, and they epitomize a relaxed and spirited era of style that has never been more relevant today. \nPamela Hanson was born in London\, grew up in Switzerland\, and attended the American School in Lugano and later the University of Colorado. Her interest in photography began early and she started her career while working as an assistant to Arthur Elgort. Her photographs of up-and-coming supermodels including Christy\, Linda\, and Kate appeared regularly in magazines such as VOGUE\, Harper’s Bazaar\, GQ\, Town and Country\, and Vanity Fair and she created print and video commercials for brands including Estée Lauder\, Ralph Lauren\, Supreme\, L’Oréal\, Dior\, and many others. Hanson directed a series of television spots to raise funds for finding a Juvenile Diabetes cure and has received an award from the Association of Independent Commercial Producers (AICP) for her “Family Stories” short documentary\, a public service announcement collaboration with The Partnership at Drugfree.org. SUMMARY:Elliott Erwitt: Last Laughs
DESCRIPTION:Elliott Erwitt was that rare thing – an original. His elegantly composed photographs\, always recognizable\, are known for their wit\, irony\, and humanity. With charm and lack of pretense\, Erwitt captured people both young and old and had a special affinity for animals. Although he avoided intellectualizing his pictures\, Erwitt’s razor-sharp observations reveal his empathy and an innate understanding of the surrealism and humor of daily life. \nAn unconventional childhood contributed to Erwitt’s unusual perspective on life. Born in Paris in 1928 to Russian-Jewish parents\, the family moved to Italy and immigrated to the US with the rise of fascism in 1939. Finding himself on his own in Los Angeles as a teenager\, Erwitt acquired a camera and took up photography. He soon found success as a commercial photographer\, but always carried two cameras: one for the job and one for personal observations. In 1953\, he joined Magnum: the renowned photography collective where\, in the late 1960s\, he served as president for three years. \nOver the years\, Erwitt has been the subject of multiple solo museum exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art\, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; and the Barbican Centre\, London\, among others. Organized by Staley-Wise Gallery in collaboration with the Erwitt family\, this presentation coincides with the publication of Last Laughs (teNeues): a new book of photographs chosen by Erwitt before his death in 2023. SUMMARY:Denis Piel: Exposed
DESCRIPTION:“This exhibition of photographs by Denis Piel is an overview of his varied career. It includes his sensual and cinematic photographs for VOGUE and designers such as Donna Karan in the 1980s\, and his abstract Padièscapes works\, which are inspired by his organic sustainable farm in southwest France. \nDenis Piel was born in France in 1944 and his family moved to Australia at the end of the war. After beginning his career in Brisbane and Melbourne\, he was encouraged to move to Europe and then New York where he began to concentrate on fashion. His photographs were brought to the attention of Condé Nast and his rise began. \nImmediately recognizable for their cinematic quality\, his images were a sensational departure from the posed models of his predecessors. His always-sensual photographs tell a story which must be guessed at as several interpretations are possible. Often featuring reclining models lost in thought or engaged in mysterious narratives\, Piel’s photographs were more influenced by filmmakers such as François Truffaut and Stanley Kubrick than photographers. His star rose swiftly and he was soon the fashion photographer of the 1980s\, shooting many celebrity portraits along the way. \nAfter a decade\, Piel moved on to advertising and filmmaking and in 2002 he moved his family to the Château de Padiès in southwest France where he became seriously interested in sustainable agriculture. This newfound passion resulted in his colorful and abstracted Padièscapes photographs; work which celebrates nature in flowers and gardens. These images are a departure from the fashion pictures of Piel’s early career\, but reflect his continued interest in the environment and humanity.  \nIn addition to his photography\, Denis Piel has created film advertisements for Donna Karan and Anne Klein. In 1993\, he directed his first feature-length documentary\, Love is Blind. Piel’s monographs include Moments (Rizzoli\, 2012)\, Down to Earth (2016)\, Filmscapes (2020)\, and the upcoming Rosemary (2025).
